Each learner proudly came to the front to discuss what products their animal provides as part of our preparation for upcoming assessments. It tells stories about history, culture, and social status. The Grade 2's explored the different styles and cultural groups who express and celebrate through jewellery! It contains a mixture of bee saliva, beeswax and substances from plants and trees. Bees use propolis, or โ€œbee glue,โ€ as a sealant produced by bees. Propolis contains over 500 bioactive molecules which have antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant properties. - Honey has no expiry date because itโ€™s already been digested. - A bee lives less than 40 days, visits at least 1000 flowers and produces less than a teaspoon of honey, but for her it is the work of a lifetime. - Capping refers to the thin layer of wax bees use to seal the honey inside the honeycomb cells once they have fully ripened. This wax cap protects the honey, keeping it fresh and preventing moisture from getting in. When harvesting honey, beekeepers gently remove (or "uncap") this wax layer to access the honey inside. The wax itself is edible and can even be used for making products like candles and lip balms!
